Wallpaper book club – Sanderson Edit

We’ve brought together a thoughtful edit of Sanderson’s most beloved classic and contemporary designs. Many of these patterns started life as fabrics, and we’ve reworked and recoloured them to make them feel fresh for today’s homes. Made exclusively for us, each design comes as an easy-to-hang paste the wall wallpaper for timeless style that’s simple to install.

Above: Etchings and Roses

Etchings & Roses is a wallpaper rooted in Sanderson’s deep archive of historic botanical artwork, faithfully reproducing rare engraved floral prints originally created in Mulhouse, France, a region long celebrated for its fine textile production and botanical illustration. The design draws directly from these antique engravings, which were once used to document plants with scientific precision and artistic care, and reinterprets them for a modern decorative context. In our exclusive green colourway, the delicate etchings appear against a rich green background with a subtle iridescent metal effect, creating a soft, luminous sheen.

Above:  Swallows

Swallows is a classic Sanderson design, dating back to the 1930s and reflecting the stylised elegance of that era. Originally created as a chintz cotton fabric, the pattern features a graceful flock of swallows portrayed in flight across an open sky, capturing a sense of lightness and movement characteristic of early twentieth-century decorative textiles. This historic motif has been revived as part of our exclusive wallpaper collaboration and is available in this collection in three colourways.

Above: Woodland Ferns

Woodland Ferns is available in five exclusive paste-the-wall colourways, offering a range of sophisticated options so you can choose tones that best suit your scheme while enjoying the dynamic contrast between the delicate fern illustrations and their vibrant grounds, a blend of classic craftsmanship and modern graphic clarity. The imagery is rooted in traditional botanical illustration, reminiscent of the meticulous studies created by naturalists in the 18th and 19th centuries to document plant forms with scientific precision and artistic elegance. Here it’s given a refreshed, graphic quality that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Above:  Stapleton Park

Stapleton Park is a classic large-scale floral design originally hand-drawn in 1990 and first created as a Sanderson fabric before being translated into wallpaper. The pattern captures a quintessentially English garden bouquet, bringing together roses, cornflowers, foxgloves, hydrangeas and trailing foliage in a lively, organic composition that reflects Sanderson’s long heritage of botanical and floral design. For Wallpaperdirect, Stapleton Park has been reissued in five exclusive paste-the-wall colourways, giving you a broader palette of sophisticated options that highlight the intricate floral artwork and bring fresh, contemporary tones to this beloved classic.

Above:  Palm House

Palm House is a striking botanical design that celebrates lush, tropical foliage with a distinctive quality that brings palm leaves to life with layered depth and movement. The design evokes the rich tradition of botanical study and the grand glasshouse interiors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, when exotic plants were captured and celebrated in art and textiles; the gently arching fronds and interplay of light and shadow give the pattern a life-like presence on the wall. For Wallpaperdirect, Palm House has been reissued in four fresh and exclusive paste-the-wall colourways, offering a range of vibrant and contemporary tones and bringing renewed energy to this timeless, tropical motif.

Above: Caverley

Available exclusively to Wallpaperdirect in five distinctive colourways, Caverley is offered in a versatile palette of tones to suit a range of interior schemes. This design is a beautifully classic pattern rooted in Sanderson’s archives, inspired by an early 19th-century hand-block print that reflects the timeless charm of English decorative arts.

The pattern depicts charming birds perched among leafy boughs and generous floral blossom, capturing a sense of pastoral elegance and natural beauty that was popular in historic textile and wallpaper designs. This imagery, typical of English style, draws on traditional craftsmanship and the meticulous artistry of early block printing, where skilled artisans would carve and print intricate motifs by hand.

Above: King Protea

King Protea is a dramatic botanical design that showcases the majestic flowerheads of this striking South African flower, renowned for its sculptural form and drama. Sanderson designers faithfully interpreted and recoloured this archival artwork to create a wallpaper that transcends the floral motifs, celebrating the protea’s bold structure with exquisite detailing and vibrant colour. We are offering the design in several colourways that highlight its rich contrast and dimensionality, some with subtle mica highlights for added depth and luminosity.

Above: Rose & Peony

This is a beloved Sanderson classic first introduced as a wallpaper in 1914 and subsequently redesigned as a printed fabric in 1929 before becoming one of Sanderson’s most iconic floral patterns. By the 1960s the design had been produced in as many as twenty-eight colourways to suit evolving interiors and has remained a much-loved surface-printed design ever since, celebrated for its painterly depiction of abundant roses and peony blooms. The pattern reflects Sanderson’s deep heritage in botanical and floral artwork, rooted in richly detailed garden subjects where roses and peonies symbolise natural beauty and elegance.

We chose to include Rose & Peony in our curated collection because it exemplifies the best of Sanderson’s archive: a design that carries historical depth, artistic craftsmanship and broad decorative versatility with a story and a track record of popularity across decades.

Above: Tuileries

We chose to include Tuileries in our curated range because it beautifully bridges classic and contemporary tastes – the light, airy botanical imagery works beautifully in a variety of interiors, whilst the archive origin gives it historic depth and an enduring decorative appeal. The design takes its name from Tuileries, echoing an artistic sensibility associated with classic European garden landscapes and historic decorative arts. In our exclusive collection, Tuileries is offered in a selection of four fresh, exclusive colourways that update the classic design for modern homes, giving you the opportunity to enjoy this elegant pattern in tones that will suit both traditional and contemporary schemes.

Above: Terrariums

We selected Terrariums because it offers something distinctive within Sanderson’s rich repertoire of nature-inspired patterns – a design that blends scientific botanical observation with decorative artistry, making it both visually engaging and versatile for contemporary interiors. Presented in two fresh exclusive colourways, this wallpaper is beautifully rendered in tones that suit a range of schemes, bringing the historic allure of glasshouse plant displays into modern spaces.

Surface printed

Surface printed wallpaper is made by applying ink directly onto the surface of the paper. The ink sits slightly raised, creating a subtle texture you can feel. Because the ink is not absorbed deeply, colours can appear more organic and gently varied.

Flat surface finish

Flat surface wallpaper is printed so that the ink is fully absorbed into the paper, resulting in a completely smooth finish. This method allows for crisp lines and consistent colour coverage.
