A sneak peek at Mini Moderns new paint collection

Thoroughly Modern Minis

We’ve been treated to a sneaky peek at Mini Moderns’ coming collection, and we’re very excited! Mini Moderns Hinterland wallpaper collection is inspired by the history and culture of the Cinque Ports towns of Kent and Sussex. We can’t show you the papers – yet! But our friends at Mini Moderns have shared these fantastic pictures of the mood boards they put together to help guide the creative process. IMG_3165.jpg The launch print in the Hinterland collection will be Dungeness, featuring a mass of shingle, punctuated by illustrated vignettes of quaint cabins, abandoned fishing boats and ramshackle huts. The two lighthouses anchoring the print flank the Mini Moderns’ very own beach house. The design duo explain: “We wanted to capture the magical environment – the structures and points of interest that anyone exploring the surrounding area will discover. Our aim was to evoke the experience of being on Dungeness beach. The landscape is in constant flux – structures are decaying and becoming obsolete, whilst others are being renovated or saved from decay at the hands of the extreme elements. We wanted to capture a moment in time – the period of time that we observed the beach.” DUNGENESS-mood.jpg The collection takes design cues from all sorts of things – everyday materials, remarkable structures, intricate folk craft and the noble flora and fauna of the exposed coastline. PLUTO-mood.jpg EQUINOX-mood.jpg Peggy – designed to look like pegboard heavily coated in layer upon layer of paint – is inspired by their many visits to the hardware store during the renovation of a converted railway carriage which has become their Dungeness beach house. The wallpaper comes in signature colours from the Mini Moderns Environmentally Responsible Paint range. Feathers marks a repeat collaboration between Mini Moderns and artist Matt Sewell, based on Matt’s feather watercolours, which feature in the design for the end papers of his book ‘Our Songbirds’. The individual feathers each relate to the birds featured in the book. Mark and Keith of Mini Moderns say “We had initially thought we wouldn’t be able to achieve a painterly effect with our traditional print production methods – but, after experimenting with our manufacturer on different techniques, we then felt we could approach Matt with the idea. Luckily he said yes.” Matt says: “It’s been great working with the guys at Mini Moderns again. They have such good taste and a fantastic approach to using illustrations in their designs that I was honoured to be asked, and over the moon when my end pages feather paintings from my ‘Our Songbirds’ book were decided upon for a wallpaper. Hope everybody loves it as much as we do!” gulls-mood.jpg

…and beyond the Hinterland

OUR ADVENTURE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN is the rather apt title for the first wallpaper collaboration between artist Rob Ryan and interiors brand Mini Moderns. Featuring Rob Ryan’s umistakable paper cut imagery, the wallpaper depicts decorative bird cages, doors thrown open, vacated by a flock of free birds. rob-mood.jpg The design is based on the end papers of Rob’s forthcoming book, “A Sky Full of Kindness.” A distinctively Rob Ryan twist comes in the form of a secret message – the design’s title – which can be read only at close quarters in the form of individual words carried in the birds’ beaks. Mini Moderns Creative Directors, Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire explain: “For us, working with Rob Ryan was a very enjoyable and creative experience. Having admired his work for such a long time it was an honour towork with such a recognised artist on this project.” The wallpaper comes in 10m x 52cm rolls printed with waterbased inks on paper from sustained forests. OUR ADVENTURE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN will be available in two colourways, Sky Blue and Afternoon Green. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – THE NEW MINI MODERNS – COMING SOON TO A WALLPAPERDIRECT.COM NEAR YOU!
